Valve has, in the past few hours, answered those who asked if Steam Deck will have exclusives of some kind, at launch or later, in a clear and unequivocal way
Steam Deck is Valve’s new portable platform that aims to challenge a market currently dominated by Nintendo Switch, which sees competition only in mobile devices. After the postponement to February 2022, when the initial launch window was scheduled for this winter, a lot of Valve’s laptop is back. An impressive popularity, in short, which has made anyone who hangs out in the industry ask if ever, some day or distant, the company may ever decide to create exclusive titles. And the answer came just recently and it’s pretty straightforward.
The Steamworks Steam Deck event was recently held and, in the FAQ section, where Numerous studios and publishers may ask specific questions to the Valve representation, the willingness (or not) to publish exclusive titles was underlined. The answer was very succinct:
No, it doesn’t make any sense to us. It’s a PC, so it just needs to run games like a regular PC.
Valve is peremptory: nothing exclusive to Steam Deck
It might be a foregone answer, indeed, in the eyes of many, but it’s pretty clear why that’s something to specify. Steam is an extremely popular platform and, considering that Valve wants to bring its entire library of titles to Steam Deck, it could create a new digital market. Additionally, there are several video games available on platforms such as Ubisoft Connect and Epic Games Store that will not run on the Steam Deck.
Therefore, the idea of creating exclusives aimed at making the option for the consumer to buy a Steam Deck even more attractive would not be bad at all. For now, however, that’s not Valve’s intentions: we’ll see in the future.
