Through a press release, I Wonder Pictures presented its programs for the Venice Grand Festival 2023, in which it will be present with 10 films in the competition: let’s find out all the details together in this dedicated article
After the success at the Locarno Film Festival of Critical Zone by Ali Ahmadzadeh (winner of the Golden Leopard) and Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World by Radu Jude (Special Jury Prize of the International Competition), film festival season continues for I Wonder Pictures, which will present ten films at the 80th Venice Film Festival. Three of these will be scheduled as part of the International Competition.
The Beast and Woman Of | Venice Film Festival 2023: The Wonder Pictures at the exhibition with 10 films!
The first is The Beast (La Bête), a new awaited work by Bertrand Bonello with Léa Seydoux and George MacKay, romance loosely based on the story The Beast in the Jungle by Henry James. In a near future where artificial intelligence dominates and emotions are considered harmful, Gabrielle must purify her subconscious by putting all her past lives in order. Here she finds Louis, her great love. But the idyll soon breaks and the premonition of a catastrophe looms on the horizon.
Also in Competition, the new film by Silver Bear director Małgorzata Szumowska, who returns to direct with Michał Englert after the amazing No more snow will fallawarded in Venice in 2020. Woman Of (Kobieta Z…), against the backdrop of the transformation of Poland in the transition from communism to capitalism, spans forty-five years of Aniela’s life, recounting her journey in search of freedom as a trans woman.
Hors-Saison and Explanation for Everything | Venice Film Festival 2023: The Wonder Pictures at the exhibition with 10 films!
The third title in the running for the Golden Lion is Hors-Saison by Stéphane Brizé with Guillaume Canet and Alba Rohrwacher. He an established actor in search of a new sense of things, she a piano teacher with a serene but banal everyday life, they loved each other about fifteen years ago and then lost each other. They meet by chance in a seaside town in western France, where their respective melancholies rekindle a flame they both thought was extinguished.
In competition in the Horizons section, Explanation for Everything (Explanation for Everything) ambientato nell’Ungheria di Orbán and directed by the award-winning director Gábor Reisz, tells of a high school exam that leads to a media scandal. There are three different perspectives from which the story is shown: that of the nationalist father, that of the liberal professor and that of the student, to restore the portrait of a country (and of a Europe?) split in two, where nobody knows or wants to communicate openly with each other.

Also in Horizons, two Italian productions that will then be brought to theaters by I Wonder Pictures. The first is El Paraiso, produced by Ascent film, Young Films with Rai Cinema, a new work by Enrico Maria Artale – already awarded at Orizzonti in 2013 for The Third Time –, with Edoardo Pesce, Margarita Rosa De Francisco, Maria del Rosario and Gabriel Montesi protagonists of a story that mixes family relationships, unresolved maternal conflicts and Italian-style crimes.
The second is the animated film Invelle, produced by Minimum Fax Media and the Swiss Amka Films Productionthe feature film debut of the celebrated animator Simone Massi, a heartfelt and poetic tale on the madness of war filtered through the eyes of childhood through three different generations.
Making of and Menus Plaisirs – Les Troigros | Venice Film Festival 2023: The Wonder Pictures at the exhibition with 10 films!
The new film by Cédric Kahn, Making of, will instead be presented out of competition, with an extraordinary cast that includes Denis Podalydès, Stefan Crepon and Jonathan Cohen, the latter in theaters in the autumn again with I Wonder Pictures as the protagonist of the comedy A difficult year by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano. A famous director begins shooting his new film, a path that will prove bumpy and full of obstacles, both professional and personal. Joseph, an extra who aspires to enter the world of cinema, agrees to shoot behind the scenes, immersing himself in all this production frenzy and thus demonstrating that sometimes the making of a film can be even better than the film itself.
Always out of competition comes Menus Plaisirs – Les Troigros, the new work of the master of documentary and observational cinema Frederick Wiseman, which takes us to France to discover the Troisgros family and its three starred restaurants. The film shows the great skill, ingenuity, imagination and hard work of the staff in creating, preparing and presenting dishes of the highest quality and the constant attention to biodiversity and the fight against waste which has earned the chain – in addition to the coveted three Michelin stars – also the Green Star for sustainable practices.
The Invention of Snow and Fragments of a Loving Journey | Venice Film Festival 2023: The Wonder Pictures at the exhibition with 10 films!
Finally, as previously announced, I Wonder Pictures will be in the Giornate degli Autori with two titles. The Invention of Snow by Vittorio Moroni in theaters from 14 Septemberis an original and emotional family drama that reveals the wild talent of its protagonist Elena Gigliotti in the role of Carmen, alone against the world for a chance to be reunited with her daughter.
Fragments of a love journey by Chloé Barreau it’s a surprising trip down memory lane in which intimate testimonies and private images mix to reveal the universal paths of the feeling of love.
