What is Quidditch?

Those of you who are diehard Muggles, totally unrelated to the wizarding world, probably know nothing of the most popular sport among wizards.

Quidditch is a fictional sport played by witches and wizards on flying broomsticks. It is played between two teams of seven players each, on an oval court with three high rings on each side. The aim of the game is to score more points than the opposing team by throwing a called ball pluffa through the circles. Each goal is worth ten points.

Besides the quaffle, there are other balls in play. Specifically there are two racing cars (heavy balls that have the sole purpose of hitting and throwing players) and the boccino d’oro: a golden ball that shoots across the playing field at high speed. So fast that it is very difficult to spot with the naked eye. The team that manages to catch the golden snitch ends the game and has a bonus of 150 points.

The teams are made up of a goalkeeper (who defends the rings), three chasers (who pass the quaffle to try to score goals), two beaters (who use mallets to drive bludgers towards opposing players, and a seeker (who has the only task is to locate and catch the golden snitch).

You will be surprised to know that Quidditch is also played in real life. And it’s irresistibly bizarre.
