The great masterpiece taken from the homonymous musical by Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents. “West Side Story” is coming: Spielberg’s remake on Disney +! Written by Tony Kushner, it is the second film adaptation of the musical after the hugely popular 1961 film by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins. We will be able to watch the film on Mickey’s streaming platform starting tomorrow, March 2, 2022! Not to be missed!
Spielberg at the head of this great project
Back in 1961, after 4 years of success and uninterrupted replicas a BroadwayRobbins and Wise, brought this to the big screen musical which already had numerous fans. The film is certainly among the fundamental works of the history of cinema, winning 10 Oscars. Today, in 2022, a modern version of the story, always (unfortunately) current, on cultural differences is re-proposed.
Given the “amount” of work and responsibility, having to deal with a Cult absolute, the production Amblin Entertainment e 20th Century Studioshave entrusted the project to the award-winning regista Steven Spielberg. The distribution was also entrusted to Walt Disney Studios. Without wishing to make comparisons, the premises of this enormous work seem to be very promising. At the 2022 Oscars the film achieved considerable success, also considering the 7 Oscar nominations and 3 Golden Globes won.
Plot
In West Side di Manhattan urban regeneration advances around 1950 in New York. The neighborhood is disputed by two gang rivals: the Jetsmade up of European immigrants and the Sharks, a gang of Puerto Rican immigrants. The film tells of the rivalries between the two gangs and their attempts to create continuous disturbances in the city by seeking affirmation by exploiting violence.
But, as often happens, in these stories there are completely incalculable contingencies. The protagonists Tony and Mariaone co-founder of the Jets and the other sister of Bernardo, leader of the Sharksthey will have to face theirs feelings. In this complex situation where factions can be of great impediment, music is the “queen”.
West Side Story songs continue to be sung and heard around the world. The immense work of Leonard Bernstein was resumed and arranged by composer David Newman. The score is performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel and Jeanine Tesori it was the vocal coach del cast.
the resumed of the film were made mainly ad Harlem, Manhattan e Brooklyn in July 2019. The film, however, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, was released in theaters last December. Now it is finally in arrival in the Disney + catalog starting March 2, 2022.
The leading actors are Rachel Zegler e Ansel Elgortflanked by Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Corey Stoll, Brian d’Arcy James e Rita Morenostar of the 1961 film.
