What If…? is the new Marvel animated TV series available on Disney Plus that explores the world of alternative hypotheses in the Marvel universe. The first episode is dedicated to Agent Carter. Here is our review of What If…? episode 1.

ORIGINAL TITLE: What If… ?. GENDER: Superheroes. COUNTRY: United States. DIRECTOR: AC Bradley. DURATION: 9 episodes, 34 mins approx. DISTRIBUTOR: Disney +. RELEASE: 11 August 2021.

What If…? the new Marvel animated TV series is available on Disney Plus, with its first episode and its universe of hypotheses. Because as the title says, this new series deals with hypothesis. The whole Marvel world, its superheroes and the Avengers, is plumbed with short animated episodes in which the protagonists live in alternative realities, following small changes in the course of their history. These are therefore explorations, experiments, in which the creativity of the writers is brought to light, but also their ability to remain adherent and consistent with the original Marvel narrative. Navigating the entire Marvel universe is not easy and so is respecting all its micro organisms and connections of facts, events, plots and characters.

Captain Carter, absolute protagonist | What If…? episode 1

The first episode, of nine in total, puts Peggy Carter at the center of the story, who during the administration of the serum to Steve Rogers, is with him in the same room and is forced to intervene after the Hydra attack. Steve is injured and so she decides to enter the machine and receive the serum, so as not to ruin years of research. This is therefore the moment when the pieces move and we enter the world of hypotheses. A hypothesis in which Peggy Carter becomes Captain Carter, a super soldier, courageous and fearless.

It must be remembered, in line with the films dedicated to her character, that Peggy was already a courageous agent, who knew how to be respected, so in reality the fact that he becomes Captain, little changes from this point of view. Except that there is still a great difficulty on the part of the high ranks to accept that it is a woman who has a similar role.

Technically well done episode | What If…? episode 1

Along with the plot, what we see in this first episode is a high level of achievement in the technical department: well done animation that very faithfully reproduces the original characters, very engaging action scenes, good direction. All with a product that is designed for fans of the Marvel world even at a younger age, in fact the scenes have a good alternation of action, drama and comedy, all well modulated.

What If…? episode 1: here you are Captain Carter

Marvel and Disney therefore definitely aim for technical quality and we expect this also in subsequent episodes. What is equally important is the script and the narrative, which know how to respect all the flow of information that is contained in the Marvel Universe and which offer us stories that are really able to entertain with their hypotheses. This first episode respects the concept of the series well, because we have a small event that totally changes the course of history for how it happened. A What If… faithfully realized which, moreover, focuses on a charismatic character like Peggy Carter, an excellent choice in general to open a new series.

Conclusion

What If…? it has begun in all respects and a lot is expected, especially for the creative freedom that the writers have had at their disposal. This first episode is certainly a good start, without great emotions, but it is consistent with the concept and offers us a high-level viewing experience. We await the next episodes to find out which characters we will see involved.
