WhatsApp it’s changing its own designalso to keep up with the landscape of messaging applications. Updating the user interface for a more modern look arrives in beta version 2.23.20.10 for Android. But will this new design seen in the beta change the way we interact with WhatsApp?
WhatsApp changes design in the new beta
Meta’s messaging application remains the undisputed leader globally: no other app has as many users as WhatsApp. But in recent times the spread of valid alternatives has convinced the app to introduce several important innovations. Including one new version of the Android application, with a different design (although it will lack the dynamic Material You theme that many other Android apps have).
WhatsApp’s user interface is in fact undergoing a significant overhaul to adopt a more contemporary look, as WABetaInfo reports (via Android Police). There The app’s top bar appears mostly colorless, which extends across both the home screen and conversations. This change should improve the experience especially for those who often use Dark Mode. In Dark Mode, the menu on the main page is a slightly lighter grey, improving readability.
Other user interface improvements include Renewed chat bubbles for users with the dark theme enabled. Additionally, the floating action buttons have undergone a redesign which should improve readability.
Channel changes
WhatsApp is also introducing a new feature that allows users to respond to updates from channels. This is a significant step towards expanding WhatsApp’s functionality, as it allows users to actively participate in channel discussions, similar to a comments section. Something already seen in other messaging apps and which has been very successful.
The goal of these changes is to make WhatsApp more modern, functional and extend its usefulness beyond simple messaging. While the app was initially designed for communication between individual users, it is now looking to embrace a variety of uses, including public channels similar to social media.
While the UI changes are currently in beta for Android, it’s likely they’ll come to iOS as well. Although they will probably have some different appearance to better adapt to iPhones.
At the moment we don’t know when they will arrive in the official version. But if your WhatsApp changes appearance in the next few days, you will know why.
