Have you ever wondered what the best games in the Atlus library might be? We do: here’s what we found digging on Metacritic
Since it opened its doors in ’86, Atlus he baked lots of great gamesand that’s why we wanted it pay homage to the best. Specifically, we based ourselves on the merits with which the various Shin Megami Tensei (and the Personas, of course!) on duty have won the favor of critics, before and after SEGA acquired the development team in 2013. There are two characteristics for which this talented developer has most distinguished himself: the first is the high challenge rate of his titles, while the second is their quality. And it is precisely the latter that is parading on the catwalk today, starting from…
5) Persona 4 Arena | The best Atlus games
Atlus has made some of its best games by collaborating with other development teams. And it is precisely the partnership with Arc System Works to have given life, on PS3 and Xbox 360, to a great fighting game: Persona 4 Arena. Probably no one would have predicted that the Persona series could lend itself so well to swashbucklers, but given the pedigree of Arc System Works with (Dragon Ball FighterZ) and without (Guilty Gear, BlazBlue) license, the result was a real pearl. From the excellent animations to the surprisingly well-crafted story for a fighting game, this is a title worth catching. The Ultimax edition has a lower rating on Metacriticbut it is the definitive version.
4) Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES | The best Atlus games
We tried in every way to prevent Persona from monopolizing our top 5, but the Metacritic numbers speak for themselves: even using an older version than the recent Reload, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES he grabs the last place before the podium. Having good reason, of course. Even without being able to control your teammates, the game remains a bomb. With the introduction of the Aegis Episode also arriving in the most recent re-release, the PS2 version of the game has expanded the story by providing the definitive key to one of the best stories told by the development team.
3) Demon’s Souls | The best Atlus games
Surprise! Yes, in the beginning it was Atlus who took care of distributing Hidetaka Miyazaki’s first beast on PS3, Demon’s Souls. Which, among other things, is also the reason why the sequels (spiritual, by necessity) took the better-known name of Dark Souls. Technically, the name issue is (as always) a complex legal tangle: Sony holds the rights to both Demon’s Souls and Bloodborne, but it was the developer with the red and blue logo who took a big risk with an unlikely localization. The story, then, gave justice and dignity to the game on PS5, with a remake still valid as the best soulslike on the platform. Demon’s Souls is worth a Patches rip-off, right?
2) Persona 4 Golden | The best Atlus games
We told you that the Persona series cheats. Specifically, the fourth chapter jostled to grab not one, but (technically) two positions! We will make up for it in terms of variety in the next paragraph, but the more “bucolic” approach compared to the urban setting of the third and fifth chapters did nothing but good to Persona 4 Golden. Between a truly pleasant narrative section and the town of Inaba acting as the theatre, this game is considered one of Atlus’ creative pinnacles, and the “golden” re-release has done nothing but amplify its merits. So much so that it holds up on Steam even today.
Honorable Mentions | The best Atlus games
As we said in our incipit, this should be a “top 14”. For the sake of brevity we limited ourselves to the top of the ranking, but it is also true that other Atlus IPs also competed for the crown for the best chapter. And while we highly doubt that last section is really a surprise, we wanted to dedicate a space to the nine positions below Persona 3. From a Wii U title brought to Switch to the perfect chronology of a radiant story, here you are… “the others”.
- 14) Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore

1) Persona 5 Royal
At the top of the best Atlus games, like it or not, it places itself unpredictably Persona 5 Royal. Hard to blame the hive mind of Metacritic, however. It’s as if Atlus had fulfilled every fan wish in this second draft, including (for us in the country) a localization in our local language. All the positive aspects of the original make their return, with additions such as quality-of-life improvements, an additional semester with a new plot, the inclusion of Kasumi and a variant of Akechi as playable characters. With an average of 93 out of 100it is not surprising that the protagonist Joker is in the gaming pantheon par excellence.
