A Son, a powerful family drama by Tunisian director Medhi M. Barsauoi, starting from 21 April, available in cinemas all over Italy
From 21 April in Italian cinemas, it will be available A Son, a powerful family drama that brings ethical and religious issues with it, at the dawn of the Arab spring. Inspired by Asghar Farhadi’s cinema and with the same tense rhythm typical of thrillers, he is ready to touch the deepest chords of the human soul.
A Son is distributed by Valmyn and I Wonder Pictures, in collaboration with the Niels Stensen Cultural Foundation.
Fares (Sami Bouajila) and Meriem (Najla ben Abdallah) are a happy couple, they have a ten year old son named Aziz and an Arab spring that brings with it hope for a better future for Tunisia. Their days pass happy and carefree, but tragedy is just around the corner.
Upon returning from a weekend in Tataouine their car is ambushed, disrupting their lives forever and bringing out an unspeakable secret. How far is it legitimate to go to save your child?
What is modernity really?
The film marks the film debut by Tunisian director Mehdi M. Barsaouispecialized at the DAMS of Bologna, and stages a story particularly steeped in the contradictions that characterize the Tunisian world of the moment.
The film puts under a magnifying glass the intertwining of the culture of patriarchy and the breakthrough of modernitythe conflict between what is impossible and what should be technically possible to save a young life.
The drama of a family forced to decide and it is inscribed in a scenario where hope is progressively replaced by violence and the horror of an unspeakable commodification. Until the meeting of a glance between a mother and a father it opens us to a future time where healing also means re-establishing human relationships on values far stronger than the purely genetic ones.
