Apple he chose Park Chan-wook (Old Boy), one of the most successful Korean directors, to make a film shot entirely on his latest iPhone. Life Is But a Dream by Chan-wook is the first project of the marketing campaign Shot on iPhone Apple to be produced, shot and edited entirely in Korea. We report it below.
Old Boy director Park Chan-wook shoots an Apple movie on iPhone
The film mixes the martial arts with the romanticismthe dark comedy and the pansori (판소리) – the traditional technique of Korean musical storytelling – to tell one surreal story with a wedding and a funeral.
In the film by 21 minutes, a gravedigger digs into an abandoned tomb to steal a coffin for White Marten’s burial. She is a warrior who died to save the village. While he digs, accidentally awakens the ghost of an ancient swordsman. When that ghost tries to take back his coffin, it, in turn, awakens the spirit Recently Deceased by White Marten: Two young dead ghosts now colliding with blades? With emotions? Or is it just a long night dream?
The Korean cast of the film includes Yoo Hae-jin (A Taxi Driver), Kim Ok-vin (Arthdal Chronicles) e Park Jeong-min (Hellbound). In a behind-the-scenes clip, the director said:
Life Is But a Dream apparently starts out as a horror movie, then slowly turns out to be a mix of fantasy, martial arts, rom-com and musicals. It’s a story I’ve always wanted to tell. I didn’t come up with a specific camera when I wrote it. What is amazing is that we can capture such a story in a movie with the iPhone.
The film was shot with iPhone 13 Pro e iPhone 13 Pro Max. The team employed several features of the latest models of Apple’s flagship phones. Park Chan-wook, whose credits include Old Boy, Thirst, The Handmaiden and HBO’s upcoming series The Sympathizer, has experience filming with a iPhone. In 2011 she made a short film, Night Fishing, with a iPhone 4who won theGolden bear for short films al 61st Berlin International Film Festival.
