Harry Potter, Yates reveals the difficulty in dividing The Deathly Hallows

David Yates, years later, has revealed what was the biggest difficulty in dividing Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows into two parts

Several years after the release of the last Harry Potter film, David Yates has decided to reveal the biggest difficulty in dividing the last chapter into two parts for the big screen. In recent years it has happened more and more often that the film adaptation of the last chapters of sagas that are very followed by the general public have undergone a division. It all started with Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows. Indeed the last novel written by JK Rowling was one of the first adaptations that was divided into two films on the big screen. Now, years after the release of both chapters of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, director David Yates has decided to tell what his greatest difficulty was in approaching the division of a single novel.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the difficulty in dividing a single novel

The seventh and final novel in the Harry Potter saga has arrived in theaters divided into two chapters. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 was released in 2010, while Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was released in 2011. David Yates directed both parts. The director revealed the greatest difficulty in having to manage two chapters from a single novel. The split was actually a winning move: in fact it turned out to be a great critical and commercial success for Warner Bros. In a recent interview Yates revealed how difficult it was to create two chapters that were both satisfying from Rowling’s novel :

Probably Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One was the most complicated. The biggest challenge of that movie was that it didn’t really have a third act. It kind of petered out halfway through and Mark Day and I were often trying to figure it out, hoping to find a solution. It was crazy that it didn’t have a third act. In those two films, first and second part, the idea was that the first one was a road movie that served to take kids out of school, put them in danger from that safe place of theirs and see how they grow, how their relationship is tested. But then we get straight to the climax and the fireworks until the final one. So we cut the first part into little pieces to try to feel that the end of the film had an escalation. There isn’t much to do at the end of the second half of the film. People keep telling me their favorite is Part One, because it’s amazing and because it felt like a European road movie.
