House of the Dragon 2 will have fewer episodes: here’s why

Director Clare Kilner explains why House of the Dragon 2 will have fewer episodes than the previous season

The second season of the Game of Thrones prequel series will have fewer episodes, and this was confirmed by director Clare Kilner herself, who also explained why. In fact, there will be only eight episodes, compared to the ten of the first seasonbut there is a very specific reason. Filming of the new episodes of House of the Dragon continues unabated in Great Britain.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Kilner explained the reasoning behind the choice, stating that the decision to reduce the episode total for the next season of the prequel of Game of Thrones was taken by the showrunner Ryan Condalremained the series’ sole showrunner in the wake of director Miguel Sapochnik’s departure.

Next season, we’re going to have eight wonderful episodes jam-packed with so many elements, to the point where we sometimes had trouble fitting them into the hour-long runtime. But Ryan’s decision was to pack as many events into as few episodes as possible, cutting out everything we didn’t feel necessary, which will result in a season full of emotion and visually exciting episodes.

House of the Dragon 2: this explains the fewer episodes compared to the first season

In essence, fewer total episodes will allow the made episodes to thrive budget-wise and content-wise. In any case, after the resounding success of House of the Dragon, an HBO show inspired by the book Fire and Blood written by George RR Martin, fans are anxiously awaiting the second season, whose release date is not yet known. Adapted from George RR Martin’s Fire & Blood, the first season of the Game of Thrones prequel was met with critical acclaim and well received nine nominations at the upcoming 2023 Emmy Awards. The first episode of House of the Dragon is the most-watched premiere in HBO history and quickly led to a second season renewal, even before the second episode even aired.

In the cast of the second season we find Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno and Rhys Ifans. George RR Martin is involved as co-creator and executive producer, in collaboration with Ryan Condal. In the team of executive producers there are then Sara Hess, Alan Taylor, Melissa Bernstein, Kevin de la Noy, Loni Peristere, Vince Gerardis. House of the Dragon 2 will arrive in Italy on SKY and NOW.
