Sometimes it happens that you insert the key into the ignition and realize that the car doesn’t start, this can be linked to various reasons, such as having turned off the engine but having left the car with the headlights on or having kept it stationary for a long time : In this guide you will find out how to connect the car battery cables to solve the problem
Something like this can happen, often to the most careless, if they leave themselves headlights on (by the way, in case you are not yet very handy, we have written a guide on how to use the fog lights and rear fog lights), or even in case the car is not driven for a lot of time. This problem can occur with anyone, but you need not fear, fix it it’s very simple. All you need is to have gods cables to connect to the battery and then someone who makes his vehicle available to help you. So you can ask some relative or some friend.
Make a bridge | How to connect car battery cables
The first step to take is to build a bridge. To do this it is essential to have another car to act as a rescue and to have the necessary cables at hand. Cables can be bought at any store auto parts shop. Alternatively you can also buy them in a supermarket that has a car department. In any case, we recommend that you always have a pair in your toolbox, so as to be ready in case the battery runs out. At this point we need to position the two vehicles, with the engine off, one in front of the other and at a close distance. At this point you need to open the hoods.
Connect the cables | How to connect car battery cables
Once you get to this point, you need to connect the two lead-acid batteries in parallel, that is, you need to connect the cables with the same pole. To avoid errors, there are two wires: one red and one black. On each end there is a clothespin. This clip gives the possibility of anchoring the battery pole. By convention the red wire must be connected to the positive pole and the black one at by the negative. At this point remove all protective caps. You take first the red thread and fix the two clamps respectively on the positive poles of the batteries. Then repeat the same process for the black wire, this time connecting the negative poles.
Charge the battery
Now that you have created the bridge, you must charge the battery. To do this you must turn on the emergency vehicle, with the gear in neutral and accelerate for a few seconds so that the engine speed increases a little. Then you have to start the car with the flat battery, always in neutral gear. As soon as the engine starts, give it some acceleration, then you have to leave both vehicles on for about ten minutes, after which you can disconnect the cables. Once done, drive for about 15 minutes, the engine must be kept active so that the battery can be recharged. At this point, turn off the car and try to restart it. If it still doesn’t start again, you need to replace the battery going to the mechanic.
