The world’s most important smartphone photography contest returns for the fifth consecutive year. Up for grabs 10,000 dollars, the new Huawei nova8i and the MateViewGT monitor. Here’s how to get involved.
HUAWEI NEXT-IMAGE Awards 2021: registrations are open
Registrations are open for NEXT-IMAGE Awards 2021, the smartphone photography contest now in its fifth edition. The initiative is aimed not only at professional photographers, but also at enthusiasts and visual storytellers. The theme of the 2021 edition is Better Together, and up to $ 10,000 in cash is up for grabs. The winners will also have the opportunity to transform their shots into wallpaper, which will be downloadable by users. It will be possible to register from now until November 30, 2021.
This year’s jury is made up of an international team of experts. The great feature is the variety of backgrounds of the members, ranging from art to sports. For example, among the jurors, we find Reuben Krabbe, Canadian extreme sports photographer and Karen Smith, a renowned UK art critic. Also present Olivier Chiabodo, French radio and television producer, Liu Heung Shing, Pulitzer-winning photographer and founder of the Shanghai Center of Photography. And then again Lin Haiyin, one of the winners of the 2020 edition of the Next-Image Awards, Yu Guoming, professor of the BNU School of Journalism and Communication e Li Changzhu, Vice Minister of the Consumer Strategy Marketing Dept at the HUAWEI Consumer Business Group.
In 2019 an Italian won the competition
There is also Italian Stefano Federici, winner of the 2019 edition with a series of black and white shots dedicated to his wife Ana. Here’s how Federici commented on the initiative:
“Winning the NEXT IMAGE Awards was the beginning of an emotional and working journey. This recognition gave me the inspiration and the courage to start a new professional life as a photographer. The most rewarding opportunity was that of having had the honor of attending the award ceremony in an important location such as the Paris Photo in the Grand Palais in Paris with my photo exhibited together with those of other internationally renowned photographers. An experience I will never forget. Subsequently, I also created a photographic project for Huawei where I tried to highlight the features of the smartphone that I had received as a prize. “
Stefano Federici’s advice to competitors
For those who wish to participate, I recommend being creative, but above all original. ”- continues Stefano Federici. “In the composition, in the frame, in the colors, in the black and white, show your point of view, adapting your personal style. Furthermore, Huawei smartphones offer the possibility of shooting in manual mode, like real cameras, avoiding automatisms and, by independently setting the various parameters on the exposure, you can create something truly remarkable and professional. Finally, tell a story that is effective and with a strong emotional impact “.
10 categories and a contest all for Italian users
The 2021 edition includes a subdivision into categories that does not include an absolute winner. The choice thus allows you to appreciate all the nuances of the different photographic styles and the different points of view. Here are the ten categories in the race:
- Portraits: Self-portraits also accepted.
- Black and white: for monochrome shots.
- Video-story: movies up to 15 minutes long.
- Foto-story: photographic storytelling with multiple shots (from a minimum of 3 photos up to a maximum of 9).
- Snapshot: for snapshots.
- Hello Life !: for colorful photos.
- Super Macro: for detail shots.
- The other categories are Wide angle, Remote shots, Night shots.
In addition, from September 15 until November 21, Huawei will launch a local sweepstakes. Every two weeks a local jury will nominate the winner of two different categories for the Next-Image 2021 Community Italia, the Italian edition of the international contest. This is the calendar of deadlines: until September 26th Portraits and Black and White; 10 October Video-Story and Photo-Story; 24 October Snapshots and remote shots; November 7 Wide angle and Night shots and, finally, until November 21 SuperMacro and Hello, life!
