It was God’s hand: Sorrentino’s film is available on Netflix

It was the hand of God, the new autobiographical film by director Paolo Sorrentino, released in cinemas on November 24, is now also available on Netflix

After being introduced to the 78th Venice International Film Festival, and having landed in the cinema, It was the hand of God is also available on Netflix, from December 15, 2021. The new film represents, for the Oscar-winning director for The great beauty, a return to the origins.

plot and cast

It was the hand of God tells the story of Fabietto Schisa, a boy who lives with his parents in Naples, in the 1980s. He lives a peaceful adolescence, surrounded by the love of relatives and friends, but also by numerous difficulties that hide behind the various members of the family. Fabietto’s existence is upset when his idol arrives in Naples: Diego Armando Maradona. The event will mark him forever, saving him from a tragic fate.

The film, produced by Lorenzo They had and from the same Paolo Sorrentino, boasts a large cast of well-known actors. Fabietto is played by Filippo Scotti, in his first starring role, which earned him the Marcello Mastroianni Award. Fabietto’s parents, Saverio and Maria, are played respectively by Toni Servillo (The great beauty, 2013) e Teresa Saponangelo (The hole in the head, 2020). Also in the cast Luisa Ranieri (Poison, 2017), Massimiliano Gallo (For your sake, 2015) e Betti Pedrazzi (18 gifts, 2020).

The partnership between Paolo Sorrentino and Toni Servillo, active for about twenty years, is therefore destined to repeat itself. Among the successful productions they have worked on we find The extra man (2001), The consequences of love (2004), The celebrity (2008), The great beauty (2013).

The return to the origins of Sorrentino

In It Was the Hand of God we witness an unpublished Sorrentino; he goes to insert numerous in the work autobiographical elements which lead back to his adolescence. The film is in fact inspired by his history, his suffering, but also his passions, such as that for Napoli and for Maradona.

Shooting this film was also an opportunity for the director of return to the places of childhood, in Naples, his hometown and show the public the places most dear to him. In the film we can in fact recognize some of the most evocative, such as Piazza del Plebiscito, the Galleria Umberto I, the Campi Flegrei and the waterfront. Without forgetting the Vomero, the area where the director grew up and of course the San Paolo stadium, now renamed Diego Armando Maradona stadium.

It was the hand of God: nominations and acknowledgments
