Jaguar Land Rover: Blockchain technology for leather sustainability

Jaguar Land Rover tested the use of secure technology blockchain to ensure full transparency within a sustainable leather supply chain. For the first time in the world, Jaguar Land Rover teamed up with supply chain traceability provider Circulor, the UK’s leading leather manufacturer Bridge of Weir Leather Company and finally the University of Nottingham to experiment with the use of traceability technology in the leather supply chain.

In addition to monitoring compliance, the digital process has enabled Jaguar Land Rover to assess the carbon footprint of its leather supply network, partnering with UK-based Bridge of Weir Leather Company to track leather with the lowest carbon footprint, from farm to finished item.

Jaguar Land Rover is committed to offering customers choices of more sustainable and responsible materials for the interior of their vehicles, such as fabric upholstery Eucalyptus in premium natural fiber available on Range Rover Evoque, and Kvadrat, a refined high quality wool blend fabric that is paired with a suede fabric made from 53 recycled plastic bottles per vehicle, available on Evoque, Range Rover Velar and I Jaguar’s all-electric PEACE.

As part of the research funded by Innovate UK, a “digital twin”Of the raw material, which allows you to track its progress through the leather supply chain simultaneously in the real world and digitally. A combination of GPS data, biometrics and QR codes was used to digitally verify skin movement at each stage of the process using blockchain technology.

Defining the verification process created a repeatable pattern to trace a single piece of leather at each stage. This project is part of the strategy Reimagine of Jaguar Land Rover: a strongly sustainable combination of modern luxury, unique customer experiences and positive social impact.

Reimagine aims to achieve zero CO2 emissions across its supply chain, products, processes and operations by 2039. Jaguar Land Rover will work with industry experts to improve sustainability, reduce emissions and collaborate on leadership in development of new generation technologies, data and software.
