Square Enix confirms: Kingdom Hearts 4 will debut on Unreal Engine 5

Kingdom Hearts 4 it will be upgraded to the engine Unreal Engine 5, reportedly during the event to celebrate Kingdom Hearts’ 20th anniversary which was held this weekend in Tokyo. Kingdom Hearts 4 is also rumored to have been developed by the Osaka studio by Square Enix – the same team behind KH3 – led by the co-director Yasushi Yasue. At the same 20th anniversary event, the director of the Kingdom Hearts series is rumored to be Tetsuya Nomurarevealed that he was thinking of create a real game based on Verum Rex – a fictional video game present in the world of Kingdom Hearts 3 Toy Box.

The fictional game is set in Squareit same alternate world where Kingdom Hearts 4 will take place.

Nomura told those in attendance on Sunday that at one point he was torn between the creating a real Verum Rex game e Kingdom Hearts 4. In the end, however, he opted for the latter because it would have been difficult to make two console games in parallel.

According to Square Enix, Kingdom Hearts 4 will mark the beginning of a “new epic storyline” titled Lost Master Arc.

Players are introduced to the Quadratum, which Square Enix describes as “an expansive great city set in a beautiful and realistic world unlike anything ever seen before in the Kingdom Hearts series.” Ichiro Hazama, Brand Manager of the series, said:

We are thrilled to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the series with the announcement of two new Kingdom Hearts titles. We would like to thank the fans for all their support over the years, and we can’t wait for them to experience everything to come for Sora.
