Let’s find out together, in this dedicated preview, what were the changes made by the Player First Games team in Multiversus with the new Open Beta version released in July: are you ready to go back to beating you with Superman?
The overwhelming power of Smash Bros on the fighting arena is undeniable and the IP of Nintendo has managed, over time, to create a real genre. And you know, as it was for Dark Souls with the “soulslike” or The Binding of Isaac with the “roguelikes”, the birth of a new genre inevitably brings with it a new phenomenon: the clones. Many fighting games have in fact been inspired by the work of the great N, in more or less voracious ways, to create terrifying monsters or at least pleasant titles. Then, there are the rarities: the clones that are damn good, that are no longer definable as such and that try to deviate from a formula, testing a new and original one. True, Multiversus?
We have already talked about the Warner Bros title in a first preview, the one based on the Closed Alpha version to which we were invited to participate some time ago. This time, we have taken the title back in our hands with the Open Beta which, probably, many of you are also participating in. After several tens of hours on the title, we therefore thought we could update you on the status of Multiversus workcoming in final form this year on PC and current and last generation consoles, with this new preview based on the Open Beta!
Where we were?
Where were we? Basically, Multiversus is a 2D platform fighting game that, in addition to recalling the aforementioned and award-winning Smash Bros, boasts a well-tested and managed free-to-play formula (Brawhlalla teaches). The first Season Battle Pass is available since August 9th, that of Season 1, with rather varied and interesting rewards, without being intrusive, unlockable by completing the tasks that will be made available after completing the initial missions. Nothing therefore going to unbalance a rather delicate balance, but equally well managed, which puts diametrically different characters on the same level in terms of type of fighters.
A truly varied and complex roster of characters that puts DC superheroes, the protagonists of Adventure Time, the Looney Toones and… Arya Stark on the same battlefield. In short, a party for all fans of the Warner Bros franchises and for anyone who wants to give four punches to that beautiful Batman chutzpah. If, during the Closed Alpha, Taz and Welma were still being tested, this time the two were officially included in the roster. In the Open Beta to be defined is the Iron Giant, which was presented some time ago.
From LeBron James to Rick & Morty | MultiVersus preview: our impressions from the Open Beta!
From 26 July, basketball player LeBron James has also been added, whose features are taken from Space Jam, and soon some characters from Rick and Morty will also replenish the already large bizarre group, with the entry of Morty Smith and, at a later date, of Rick Sanchez. News that has nothing to do with the drafting of the preview aside, the extreme variety given by the various fighting styles of each character is what drives us to always play one more game of Multiversus. Of course, you will tend to select some to use them more often and level them up according to your preferences, but the charm of the novelty and the antics that each fighter brings with them are really numerous and worthy of being tried at least once.
The gameplay has obviously remained unchanged compared to what we tried in the Closed Alpha. The modes currently available in Multiversus are always the same: the classic Team (2v2), the 1v1, the Co-Op vs AI (in which you fight against bots) and the Free for All (TCT). The interesting thing introduced in this Beta is the possibility to select all four modes at the same time and activate matchmaking, so as to reduce waiting times if you do not want to explicitly dive into a specific mode. We must admit that the latter are however very limited, probably also thanks to the amount of players who are playing in the Beta, compared to the Alpha.
Bold and interesting choices | MultiVersus preview: our impressions from the Open Beta!
If you want a complete look at the Multiversus gameplay we refer you to our first dedicated article, because from this point of view things have changed very little. The dynamism of the combat system, its speed and heterogeneity are certainly strengths, even if sometimes everything risks becoming a bit too chaotic. In this regard, the tutorial section comes to a great help, which through a series of small trainings (which seemed to us even more than the Alpha) and the use of the Laboratory, will allow you to take a hand with the combat system of each fighter. .
We continue to be surprised by the total absence of loot boxes, which let’s face it would have been perfect in a title like that as well as in many of its competitors. The choice, which we would call at least special, was made by the developers who immediately denied its current or future presence. The shop, on the other hand, is at least vast and rich in content, with many purely aesthetic elements that can be purchased with real currency in order to customize our fighting style and, why not, also our fighters.
Let’s wait!
In short, concluding this fleeting second preview dedicated to Multiversus and based on its Open Beta, there are really many elements that make it interesting and different from many competing titles. Definitely starting from the strength of its roster on a wide circle of fans of the various franchises, to also pass to the great attention that the developers of Player First Games have reserved for the various communities (and memes, with Shaggy Super Saiyan, ed.) And to the simultaneous absence of any form of loot boxes. The path taken is definitely the right one, as well as the commitment and love that has been poured into this game. Good job!
