New Toyota Aygo X becomes a compact crossover

Nuova Toyota Aygo X, la citycar cambia pelle e diventa un crossover compatto thumbnail

The Aygo is the smallest car in the Toyota range, but its latest version, the new Aygo X is not a direct successor, but a compact crossover. The vehicle was designed in the Toyota-Lexus design center near Nice, while production takes place in Kolín in the Czech Republic.

The new Aygo X is based on the platform Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), already used for the new Yaris and Yaris Cross. The model that will arrive in dealerships, first of all stands out for its two-tone paint finish as standard, but also for the front grille which is now trapezoidal. This geometric shape recurs at various points on the Aygo X’s external bodywork. The daytime running lights and indicators are now offered with LED technology. The designers were inspired by spices for the four colors provided: the green tone is called Cardamom Green, the Chilli Red it is a strong red color which blue metallic particles make dark, The Ginger Beige (ginger) is the most classic tone, while The Juniper Blue (juniper intended as berries) is a dark blue, with reddish hues.

A limited edition and even more spicy than Aygo X, it will be available in Cardamom Green for the first few months of sales, and will feature Mandarina Orange exterior details – matt orange – and 18 ″ matt black alloy wheels. The presence of Mandarina details will also continue inside, with panels and coverings in the same color.

New Toyota Aygo X, a small and agile crossover as in the Aygo DNA

The dimensions of the new Aygo X do not betray the DNA of the car, designed above all to move easily in city traffic. In fact the total length is only 3.7 meters and the reduced width of only 1.74 meters. However, the small crossover it is 1.51 meters high, which promises a lot of space inside. In addition, the standard 18-inch wheels ensure high ground clearance. Toyota also promises reduced pitch and roll movements compared to the previous Aygo. Obviously there is no version with all-wheel drive.

The interior of the Aygo X should be quieter than the previous version thanks to the generous use of insulation materials. For audio enthusiasts there is a JBL audio system with 300 watt amplifier, four speakers and a subwoofer in the trunk, which comes at an additional cost. Fresh air enters the cabin via the optional electric folding fabric roof. There is also ambient light for a pleasant indoor atmosphere. The infotainment system at the top of the center console comes with a 9-inch display that allows you to manage or Android Auto o Apple Carplay. There is also the Toyota MyT app which can be used, for example, to read data such as the position of the vehicle or the level of fuel tank filling. Software updates are possible over the air (OTA), i.e. wirelessly.

The safety systems of the new Toyota Aygo X include a number of technologies that almost no other manufacturer currently offers in the A segment. The most interesting is the Toyota Safety Sense which features a camera and millimeter-wave radar located in the front of the vehicle, which allows the pre-collision system to activate even at higher speeds. Given its “town” vocation, pedestrian detection now works day and night, while cyclist detection is limited to daylight hours. There is also an adaptive cruise control, a lane keeping assistant and one dedicated to emergency steering.

It arrives in the spring of 2022

A 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine (1KR-FE series) with 72 hp is used to power the Aygo X. This very economical powerplant allows you to it travels 100 km with only 4.7 liters of petrol, emitting only 107 g / km of CO2 into the atmosphere. The buyer of the basic version manually engages the five gears. Optionally, a continuously variable transmission with five virtual gears is also offered.

Toyota is expected to deliver the first models between May / June 2022. Prices have not yet been announced, but considering that the starting cost of the Aygo was 13,300 euros, and that of the Yaris starts 17,000 euros, the new Aygo X should be placed in the middle, with a price of around 15,000 euros.
