New Windows 11 “tabs” feature: final details

Windows 11’s new “tabs” feature apparently reduces File Explorer RAM usage

Windows 11 (here for more info on the operating system) has finally gotten support for the tabs in File Explorer with Sun Valley 2 (version 22H2) which will be launched in the fall. The support for browser-like tabs in File Explorer will finally make it easier for users to be able to switch between windows. In addition to the tabs, File Explorer will also have a new cluttered free navigation sidebar.

Microsoft (here for more info) presented the new File Explorer on Windows 11 in Beta e Dev Channel. The new tabs feature, enabled by default, allows you to easily switch between windows. In other words, you don’t need to open new Explorer instances every time you want to browse more than one folder or directory at the same time.

Details on the new “tabs” feature in Windows 11

Compared to a full-fledged new window, a new tab within File Explorer uses a minimum memory. We observed this behavior in our tests and users also reported similar results. For example, if you start a new card, only a few megabytes will be added to the existing File Explorer process. In fact, File Explorer memory usage only increased by 1MB. This is especially useful if you have a habit of opening more File Explorer instances / windows. By opening the tabs, you can reduce resource usage and stay productive.

Although the update will be rolled out gradually, there is still a chance that Microsoft will make further improvements to File Explorer performance. Everyone will immediately receive this feature in Windows 11 22H2 when it launches for the public in Autumn. Microsoft is apparently testing this new File Explorer with some users in Windows 11 22H2 o versioni successive. According to the company, File Explorer with tabs and navigation sidebar will begin rolling out to a larger user base in the coming weeks. While tab support promises better performance, the new File Explorer navigation panel cuts down on clutter.

File Explorer sidebar

The new updated layout File Explorer for the sidebar makes it easy for users to navigate to the directories that matter to you. Provides quick access to frequently used and locked folders and OneDrive cloud profiles that have already been added to Windows. Microsoft wants reduce clutter in File Explorer and make room for features like OneDrive. As a result, the Windows known folders no longer appear on This PC and the focus is now only on hardware unit.
