As announced earlier this month, with the new update Blizzard has finally introduced cross-play to Overwatch, albeit with limitations to avoid excessive imbalances in games: let’s see below how it works!
Blizzard’s promise to introduce the long-awaited cross-play mode in its flagship FPS dates back to the beginning of the month. Here finally the update has therefore arrived: Overwatch, from now on, will support the cross-play. This functionality has not been introduced in a totally unconditional way, but limitations have been placed to avoid excessive imbalance in games: let’s see all the details below, to get a better idea of how it works.
How does cross-play work on Overwatch?
Various details about how cross-play works in Overwatch had already been explained via a FAQ on the official Blizzard website. All players of all platforms (so Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, PlayStation4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC) will have the opportunity to play cross-play. For console players, in particular, it will be necessary to connect to a account Blizzard to make it possible. As game director Aaron Keller specified:
By default, a group of console players will play against other console players. A group of PC players will play against other PC players, and the same goes for groups made up of both PC and console players.
Cross-Play has arrived.
You can now group up with friends across the globe on PC, @xbox, @playstation and @nintendo.

For what concern competitive, the cross-play between PC and console players will not work: this is to avoid the enormous advantage that players who use mouse and keyboard have against those who use the controller (competitive cross-play between console players is however allowed Finally, Blizzard has announced that, for the occasion, those who log in will receive a golden loot box.
