Red: Red, not just the color of passion

Unleash your wild side. Thus the trailer for Red throws a big assist to the story.

Set in Canada in the distant early 2000s; the protagonist of the story is the young thirteen year old Mei Lee. Bright and intelligent, surrounded by friends and with a great sense of humor; she is the embodiment of the perfect daughter. But under her perfect appearances she hides her true nature of her: a rebellious soul ready to explode, through passions and loves far from its traditions. Pressed by the enormous expectations of her that her mother places in her, and victim of the great hormonal storms of her puberty; Mei finds himself faced with a huge problem: every time he gets too excited, he turns into a Red Panda large.

The cause? A mystical and ancient bond that binds his family to the imposing animal.

Red: the Coming of Age told in the Disney-Pixar comeback

Once again Disney presents a work that is anything but simple, analyzing one of the factors that all of us have had to face in life: growth.

With an atypical and distinctive style, but full of Disney values, the young director carries on a film capable of tell directly the drama of puberty and the discovery of adolescence, with its annexes and connections. A clean, direct and taboo-free story, guarded in a funny and clumsy Red Panda.

As the same admits Domee Shi:

I chose the red panda because it is a very cute animal and because it is the perfect metaphor for puberty: at the age of Mei Lee I was always red, for embarrassment, for anger … and then the sky is also red! She is as I was at her age, a bit nerdy, I too went from being the good girl with many good grades in school, to the trauma of physical transformation, even if I didn’t like boy bands but I was more obsessed with Harry Potter and anime

The metaphor of transformation is therefore explored in a perfect alternation, made of reflection and irony, through a colorful narrative style and well-structured writing, without ever leading to banal or childish.

Red: find your place in the world

Red it is also the metaphorical exploration of finding your size in the surrounding world, imposing their own ideas and passions, at the cost of clashing with the traditions of belonging. It is no coincidence that the physical and symbolic transformation shown in the film of the figure of the young Mei Lee, represents the tumultuous mother-daughter relationship and confrontation. A point of view universally shared by many, as well as by the director herself. Inspired by the complex relationship she had with her mother, she too found herself poised between two cultures (eastern and western). Driven by the desire to search for her own identity and self-determine her ambitions and aspirations, she has been able to bring her goals to terms, opposing rigid expectations without denying her origin.

For this reason, the manifestation of the Red Panda tangibly represents Mei Lee’s desire to break away from the strong pressures she perceived, unhinging the false equilibrium that existed until now.

However, the desire to define oneself must not be perceived as a rejection of one’s traditional values; as much as one uniqueness to enhance and enhance. As explained by Domee Shi:

It is important that Mei Lee will eventually be able to live with her “red panda”, her deepest identity, which perhaps past generations have had to suppress, but which with the changing times can be challenged as a force.

In the choices made, you are never different, albeit outside the guidelines. A difficult path with enormous depressions and tensions, which every generation (from young to elderly adults, without distinction) has faced. Everything is part of the growth to know the true self.

Accept yourself and be accepted for the person you are, without the need for forcing or pretense, letting go of pure and uncontaminated emotions and feelings.

Red: the revolution for women

Domee Shi is considered the first woman to direct a Disney-Pixar cartoon. She is already known for directing the animated short Bag(released winner in 2019 at the Oscars as best short film) immediately pointed out the enormous potential in her.

Flanked by Lindsey Collins in the project of Red, Domee Shi states:

All sections of this industry have long been led by men only, but today there is more openness to different looks and the number of girls who are interested in animation is constantly increasing. In short, you will see that, from Pixar, more and more products signed by women will come out

Red: the Coming of Age told in the Disney-Pixar comebackEntry into Pixar back in 2011 to follow an internship in the storyboard sector, he wanted keep faith with its originsproposing in the his first debut a film that was as much his as a mirror for the others. Deepening the personal memories and cultural influences he received (from Kafka to Japanese anime), he immediately spurred the Pixar animators to touch a different style. You challenge welcomed with great enthusiasm and desire, ready to bring great winds of innovation to new horizons.
