They have been awarded today at the Hall of Honor of the Museum of Civilizations, the winning schools of the first edition of national competition “I Longobardi in Minecraft” announced dall’Associazione Italia Lombardi’ with the organizational support of Maker Camp, with the aim of enhancing, through the educational use of the “Minecraft” video game in the “Education Edition” version, the seven groups of historical monuments that make up the UNESCO site “The Lombards in Italy. Education, communication, information and digitization, at the service of the promotion and enhancement of cultural heritage are the cornerstones of the mission that the project has developed, culminating today in a gratifying and qualified recognition of the commitment and work of creativity, at the service of sharing and disseminating Lombard history, of these very young protagonists, with the enthusiastic and passionate participation of numerous educational institutions in the “Lombards in Minecraft” competition. The precious setting of the Museum of Civilizations – Arts and Traditions section (for the ceremony) and Early Middle Ages section (for the following guided tours) – contributes to making today’s award ceremony an emblematic and unforgettable moment, confirming the symbolic and real value of places of culture and knowledge, as a function of the conservation and intergenerational sharing of the history and memory of our identity.

The national competition “I Longobardi in Minecraft” involved the participating students in the creation of a storytelling on the civilization of the Lombardstoday unanimously recognized as authentic protagonists of the social, cultural and artistic transition that took place in Italy between the Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages, inviting schools to promote the knowledge of the Lombard people and their cultural heritage, of which the monuments protected by the UNESCO serial site, through the instrument of videogame culturewhich was expressed in concrete terms in the elaboration of narratives and thematic settings created with the video game Minecraft.

For us it is important to stimulate children on cultural content and we are used to doing it using the language of video games. historical sites of the UNESCO site, distributed throughout the Italian territory. The Lombards first came to life within the scenarios studied in the classroom and reproduced in Minecraft, they then managed to stimulate the creativity of the children for their storytelling and finally welcomed the winning classes inside the Museum of Civilizations ready to act as frame their digital works.
The objective of the contest was in fact that of stimulate children in research and documentation on the Lombard people and in particular, in the enhancement and cognitive dissemination of the seven groups of historical monuments of UNESCO site “The Lombards in Italy. The seven groups of monuments, distributed in five different Italian regions are: the Gastaldaga area and the episcopal complex in Cividale del Friuli (UD), the monumental area with the Monastery of San Salvatore – Santa Giulia a Bresciathe Castrum with the Torba Tower and the Church of Santa Maria Foris Portas Torba and Castelseprio (VA), the Basilica of San Salvatore a Spoleto (PG), the Tempietto del Clitunno a Campello sul Clitunno (PG), the Complex of Santa Sofia a Benevento ed the Sanctuary of San Michele a Monte Sant’Angelo (FG).

A storytelling articulated in a particular story that revolves around the enhancement of the artistic and cultural heritage of the town of Senago and highlights the development of three important aspects: the elaboration of the central theme, the attention to the enhancement of group work and the ‘having been able to use all the educational tools offered by the videogame. A Minecraft world full of characters and original elements accompanied by an explanatory video, fun and full of narration that rewards the ability to “know how to tell”
2nd place – Classes 4 ° C, 4 ° D, 5 ° A, 5 ° B – Comprehensive Institute “Luigi Perna – Dante Alighieri” of Avellino – Campania
An award that aims to underline the ability to manage the complexity of multidisciplinary work. The final paper consists of an important material collection work that the pupils of these five primary school classes have been able to coordinate well, bringing to the conclusion a playable storytelling on the Lombards; representative and well structured. The work is the testimony of the precious opportunity that has allowed the students to make new friends, to learn to face difficulties independently and without giving up, putting themselves to the test and managing to complete this impressive work.
3rd place – Class 5 ° B, Comprehensive Institute “Anna Frank” by Rho (Mi) – Lombardy
A project in which imagination and creativity transport us into a story with original intertwining, also through the use of complex mechanics mixed with elements of a rich narrative. Each student was able to offer their skills and merge them with those of the others, witnessing the particular value of group work and inserting an interesting series of Lombard-themed Easter eggs.
Secondary school of the “Lombards in Minecraft” competition
1st classified – Classes 1 ° C, 1 ° E, 2 ° C, 2 ° E, 3 ° C, 3 ° E – Comprehensive Institute “Luigi Perna – Dante Alighieri” of Avellino – Campania
Longobardscape is the splendid multidisciplinary realization of an Escape Room that takes the visitor / player on a stimulating and engaging journey among the numerous places of Unesco sites, to discover the extraordinary culture of the Longobard people, its traditions and its rituals. A leap into history between quizzes, skill tests and the faithful reconstruction of the places that make up the serial site. Longobardscape is a game / documentary journey that can find its place in every classroom as a testimony to the validity of an innovative teaching that stimulates curiosity and the desire to learn.
2nd place – Classes 1st E, 2nd A – Comprehensive Institute East Rovereto “Damiano Chiesa” of Rovereto (Tn) – Trentino Alto Adige
With their project, the boys seem to transport us to a parallel universe, a journey between past and present, between history, “cubes of poetry” and an imaginary suspended between the cracks of time. A journey that involves a labyrinth of stories within stories, in which the lives of historical figures of the ancient Lombard Kingdom intertwine with those of the designers themselves, with their own styles and current problems.
An unconventional storytelling, with a great evocative capacity, both in the narration and in the architecture of the Minecraft world, the result of a great interdisciplinary work and cooperation on the part of the boys.
