The Embracer Group has confirmed, in the past few hours, that five video games on The Lord of the Rings are in development with an output scheduled for the financial year 2023/2024: let’s find out all the details together
In August last year, Embracer Group announced that it has purchased Middle-earth Enterprises and all of The Lord of the Rings IP. The umpteenth purchase in a long series for the Swedish company, which in the last three years has incorporated many development teams (from Metro to Insurgency, passing through Gearbox) up to the acquisition of the western part of Square Enix, i.e. Crystal Dynamics , Square Enix Montreal and Eidos Montreal. Returning to The Lord of the Rings, the company has admitted that it has long-term plans for the IP and good ideas for how to use it. Although, of course, we do not have a clear vision of what these plans are, at least for now, Embracer Group has admitted in the past few hours that it has several titles planned. Five, to be exact.
In the tax report for the first part of the year, The Embracer Group said it has five Lord of the Rings games scheduled for the 2023/2024 financial year, which runs from April 2023 to March 2024. The company said:
This acquisition has generated a lot of interest from both internal and external partners for The Lord of the Rings IP, in different media outlets. There are currently five games in production by external partners, due for release in the 2023/2024 financial year.
Embracer Group has five video games scheduled for release next year of The Lord of the Rings
Of these five video games, in fact, we already know four of them. The best known is obviously The Lord of the Rings: Gollum by Nacon and Deadalic Entertainment. We also have the mobile title from Electronic Arts, The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle Earth, and the survival co-op from Free Range Games, published by North Beach Games, The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria. Finally, a title from Private Division and Weta Workshop that doesn’t have a title yet, but which is set in Middle-earth. In short: a lot of stuff on the horizon!
In short, five video games coming out in the next year (approximately) for The Lord of the Rings. Embracer Group seems to have big plans for the IP and we are very curious to find out.
