TikTok is one of the most popular apps in the world, with over a billion monthly active users. Short video platform has created opportunities dbusiness for many creators, who have earned fame and money thanks to their viral content. But cWhat would happen to these creators if TikTok were banned in some countriesas do the US and India threaten to do?
TikTok creators think ahead in the event of a ban
According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, some users are staying already planning for a future without the platform. The newspaper reports the statement of Shay Regis, a 33-year-old influencer who sells used clothes in Houston. After discussing their finances with her husband in various scenarios without TikTok, she explains: “They could take everything away from us“.
With the risk of US bans, other creators are looking to transfer their fans to other apps, such as Instagram Reels o YouTube Shorts. However, it’s not easy to replicate the success achieved on TikTok, where the algorithm favors the discovery of new content and virality.
Also, some users are afraid of lose the community and sense of belonging they found on TikTok. The platform hosts different groups and niches, such as icosplayers, dancers or LGBTQ+ rights advocates. For many of them, TikTok is a space for expression and entertainment.
TikTok’s future is uncertain due to political tensions between China and other countries. The US government accuses the app of posing a threat to national security and user data privacy. India already blocked access to TikTok last year.
TikTok defends itself by claiming to operate in a way independent from its Chinese parent company ByteDance and to comply with the local laws of the countries in which it operates. The app has also tried to reassure its users and creators through press releases and videos. But also by proposing to use American servers in the USA and European servers in the EU.
But the conflicts have not reduced, indeed it seems that the legislators are increasingly convinced of banning the social network. Something that it has a geopolitical value, but also an economic one: Creators would lose the platform that employs them. Switching to other social networks is a complex solution but, at the moment, very popular. Just to be safe.
