US research: 2021 gasoline vehicles have 72% longer range than electric ones

The Office for Vehicle Technologies of the‘US Department of Energy (DOE) has published interesting research involving gasoline and electric vehicles. According to the data revealed, theand electric cars launched in 2021, offer an average of 377 km of range, compared to 648 km miles for petrol models which entered the market in the same year. While this is a notable difference, the average range of electric vehicles has increased rapidly since they first hit the roads. Suffice it to say that in 2011, the year in which the first electric cars appeared in the USA, the average range was only 151 kilometers.

The DOE itself also notes that the maximum range for any electric vehicle offered in the year 2021 was 652 km, but there are already models EVs announced for the year 2022 which will reach a maximum range of over 800 km. As more long-haul electric vehicles become available, the range discrepancy between gasoline-powered vehicles and electric vehicles is likely to continue to narrow, with the latter’s average mileage set to move 400km to very soon become even 500 km.

Average range of electric vehicles vs. petrol vehicles: to date it is still too high

Taking into consideration the data released by the DOE, a substantial difference in autonomy between the two power supplies is immediately apparent. If the average for EVs is 272 km, it means that gasoline vehicles can travel, on average, about 72% more kilometers. In the case of the maximum value, the difference is 579 km or 89% more always in favor of petrol models.

The data are compared taking into consideration a full charge and a full tank.

This is a rather significant disproportion, but we know that already this year, with the arrival of the Lucid Air 2022 that promises 837 km of autonomy this will significantly improve the maximum value of 100% electric cars. This model should also appear in Europe in 2022, although for now, Italy does not appear among the markets that the company has indicated to invest for the Old Continent.

To get an idea, here are the 10 best EV cars on the market in Italy for autonomy declared and related list price:
