Through a press release, Nintendo made us aware of a nice initiative regarding its Videogames Laboratory, with which it tried to teach the pupils of a primary school … coding

Not just Nintendo Direct. In May of last year, exclusively for Nintendo Switch, the great N released Laboratory of Videogames, a gaming experience that allows you to learn, in an interactive way, the programming of a videogame software. Through guided lessons, designed to be fun and stimulating, the software adapts to any level of experience and allows anyone to learn a little bit about coding and development. After the success of the activity held last summer in the Bulgorello Summer Camp, which saw a group of 34 students study the basics of computer programming using the tool deployed by Nintendo, a first grade primary school has chosen to bring the Laboratory directly in the chair, inserting it within the didactic program of a class. The Project, which officially started last September, involved the fifth year pupils of the Giovanni Paolo II Primary Institute in Como and will last until March, with the children trying to create their own video game.

Videogames Laboratory is an experience that allows anyone to create and share their video games in an easy and accessible way. It allows indeed even the little ones to realize their game design ideas with fun guided lessons that teach the basics of visual programming. And it is precisely with this tool that the students of John Paul II were able to create from scratch a video game divided into rooms, in which the player must move and interact with various elements to face exercises such as math tables or the translation of words from the ‘English. The pupils achieved their first result after eight weeks of work done within the technology and English lessons, for a total of 20 hours. In the coming months, the goal will be to further enrich the video game, primarily with a section dedicated to art and the recognition of primary colors.

Nintendo and the interesting initiative with primary school pupils and Videogames Laboratory!

As the teacher leading the project pointed out, Beniamino Cefalùthe one with Videogames Laboratory is:

… a perfect exercise to develop a mindset oriented to computational thinking: programming is in fact an activity capable of stimulating and making the minds of the little ones grow in a marvelous way, thanks to the use of logic and a type of reasoning that it presupposes the ability to put in order the correct mental processes to arrive at the solution of a problem. Furthermore, the idea of putting school and an element with the video game on the same level, part of the daily free time of children, has led them to engage even more willingly in learning, with excellent results.
