World Poetry Day: March 21st to remember its beauty

Anniversaries often serve to remind us of the importance of something. On the occasion of March 21st, we focus on World Poetry Day, an art form of the highest importance

Like every year since 1999, March 21st not only represents the beginning of spring, but also the world day dedicated to poetry. Although times have changed and the world is in full flux, art has been able to adapt and, at the same time, distinguish itself. From pen and paper to digital, without forgetting the typewriter. This splendid form of communication remains a eulogy to fragility, to self-confession towards new perspectives. It remains – to all intents and purposes – an internal journey made of dreams and fears.

World Poetry Day, beginning of spring: some songs

Whether we are talking about foreign authors or Italian authors, it doesn't matter. Poetry is a real world in itself, which detaches itself from writing and tells a portion of one's soul. One of the most covered aspects is often that of love, exposed in different ways and with countless nuances. For the occasion we wanted to remember the beauty of this fantastic art form with the poems of two great timeless poets: Jacques Prévert ed Eugenio Montale.

The first is a French author (1900-1977), who distinguished himself by also playing the role of screenwriter. A true artist who gave us, among many, a eulogy to love, the real, pure and visceral one.

Below is one of his most iconic compositions: Boys who love each other (taken from the collection “Spectacle”, 1951):

Boys who love each other

Boys who love each other kiss standing up
Against the doors of the night
And the passersby who pass by point their fingers at them
But the boys who love each other
I'm not there for anyone
And it is only their shadow
That trembles in the night
Stimulating the anger of passers-by
Their anger, their contempt, their laughter, their envy
Guys who love each other aren't there for anyone
They are elsewhere much further than the night
Much higher than the day
In the dazzling splendor of their first love

Subsequently we turn to Eugenio Montale (1896-1981), Italian author who has often been talked about. Constantly searching for his person, he left us an indelible memory of a love that is worth more than anything else: not just that for his wife, for a person capable of being close to him, understanding him and making him appreciate life.

Below is his most poignant composition: I got out giving you my arm (taken from the collection “Satura”, 1971):

I got out giving you my arm

I went down, giving you my arm, at least a million stairs
and now that you're not there there's emptiness at every step.
Even so, our long journey was short.
Mine still lasts, I don't need them anymore
connections, reservations,
the traps, the scorns of those who believe
that reality is what you see.

I've walked down a million stairs holding your arm
not because perhaps with four eyes you can see more.
I got them off with you because I knew about the two of us
the only true pupils, although so dimmed,
they were yours.

If we still ask ourselves what the beauty of poetry is, there is only one answer: let's try to be carried away by the need of these artists who, before being artists, are men with emotions, fears and desire to live. A day in which we intend to remember the poetess Alda Meriniborn on March 21, 1931.
