Bookcity closed its eleventh edition with record numbers: 140,000 visitors were counted during the days of the event
The eleventh edition of Bookcity, the event of the city of Milan dedicated to the theme of reading. The work of 400 volunteers and 1,300 scheduled events made it possible to conclude this edition with record numbers: 140mila people attended the event, an increase in visitors of the 15% compared to last year. The event saw the participation of many literary (and non-literary) realities present in all the municipalities of Milan, from bookshops to libraries, but also theatres, prisons e hospitalscreating a fabric of collaboration that has allowed the excellent success of the event.
Bookcity: the hybrid life
The central theme of this year’s Bookcity, presented by the author Melania Mazzucco, is that of hybrid life, which has seen many declinations ranging from science to society. During the meetings, the concept of hybrid touched various facets, such as gender or nationality, the world of artificial intelligence and technology in general; the discussions were initiated thanks to the presentations organized by the 193 publishers present, but also by Italian and foreign writers and essayists, school groups and participating universities. To crown the theme of this Bookcity was also the massive social coverage, thanks also to the new Tiktok profile.
It does not end here
This year’s Bookcity edition is full of surprises and doesn’t seem to finish yet; on 27, 28 and 29 November the events continue, in fact, respectively at Red Church Libraryto the point of community Made in Corvettoe to Baggio Library. Furthermore, a collaboration between Bookcity and Trenord organized the project until November 2023 On the train. Readings from the great works of international literaturea collection of 15 podcasts that are perfect for listening to while travelling.
What is Bookcity
Born from the desire of the municipality of Milan and the association Bookcity Milanin collaboration with the Italian Publishers Association (AIE), the Italian Libraries Association (AIB) and the Italian Booksellers Association (ALI), since 2012 Bookcity has been an event that aims to focus on widespread events on the urban territory the themes of the book, of reading and of the readers, as engines and protagonists ofidentity of the city and its transformations historical. The event sees about three days of events – plus one dedicated to schools – in which meetings, book presentations, dialogues, reading aloud, exhibitions, shows and seminars on new reading practices are organised.
