Netflix: “We are thrilled with the Night School video games”
At the end of September, in line with the “expansionist” market strategy in the sector video games, Netflix acquired Night School Studio, the developer behind the acclaimed Oxenfree. During an earnings call this week, the TV series giant’s co-CEO, Wilmot Reed Hastings, asked colleagues how they would set expectations “in terms of future acquisitions”.
“Again, it’s something that will be opportunistic and occasional,” replied COO Gregory Peters. “So, I’d say don’t expect to see us squander on crazy purchases or something. This will be one of the tools we will use and we will use it opportunistically when we find a great opportunity out there ”.
Spencer Wang, the company’s vice president of finance, added:
It can be said, based on our track record, that we are quite selective when it comes to mergers and acquisitions. But as Greg said, when an opportunity arises where we feel aligned with the company, I think it’s an opportunity we’ll take. But again, it’s nothing more than that.
Peters also commented on the decision to purchase Night School, which he is currently working on Oxenfree II: Lost Signals for release on Switch, PS4, PS5 and PC in 2022:
We’re incredibly excited about that particular team because, in reality, the core of what they’ve done is trying to explore the story and narrative as essentially the core game mechanic. And we think it fits really, really well with what we want to do from our point of view. So it was great to get them involved and to get them involved and to hear their thoughts and ideas. And I expect this will be a fruitful partnership for years to come.
