Nikon and AFP: a partnership for image authenticity in thumbnail journalism

Nikon is pleased to announce the collaboration with the Parisian news agency Agence France-Press (AFP). This partnership involves AFP photographers who will be able to take advantage of the new image provenance function that Nikon recently developed for its cameras. All this will be useful especially in the field of journalism.

Nikon and AFP collaborate to protect against unauthorized use of images

The aim of this partnership is protect individuals and businesses operating in the imaging sector and any unfavorable results caused by falsification and/or unauthorized use of images, allowing photographers to carry out their creative and professional activities with greater peace of mind.

Nikon and AFP together for photo reliability

Ensuring the authenticity of images, especially in the field of journalism, is an important challenge that Nikon and AFP take up, thanks to the new function that characterizes Nikon cameras. To implement this new feature in its cameras, Nikon will begin hands-on testing of its performance within the AFP workflow. This implies the possibility of attaching information such as sources and origins from the moment the image is captured. The goal is improve the reliability of news photos and simplify the fact-checking process.

The electronic watermarking technology

Nikon has also incorporated the electronic watermarking technology in the new feature and is simultaneously developing an innovative feature that generates images with watermark data embedded directly into the camera system. This means that even if metadata compliant with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) specifications is accidentally deleted, the correlation to the original image can be determined. This allows for the construction of a more robust authenticity system, thus contributing to higher quality image verification.

Nikon will continue to incorporate new elements into the evolving specifications of the C2PA and to conduct development and testing. This feature is planned to be included in upcoming products and the timing of its incorporation will be announced separately once determined. Nikon continuously strives to meet user needs, offering numerous innovative and useful features that set the standards for the future.
