The year is coming to an end and it’s time to take stock: the TechGameWorld.com editorial staff presents the top 10 of the best TV series of 2022

2022, which is about to end, has been a heterogeneous year for the world of TV series, now dominated by three platforms (Disney +, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video) which hold an almost monopoly on releases. A varied and vast panorama, including unpublished productions, new arrivals and returning shows from all over the world. With thousands of titles available, it is difficult to find your way around, and even more difficult to identify the best TV series of 2022. We at TechGameWorld.com have tried, asking the entire editorial staff for this purpose. The following ten titles are the result of this vote. It goes without saying that the choice was also dictated by personal tastes and that we do not think we have the absolute truth on the subject. Also for this, let us know in the comments which is your heart series of 2022!

The best TV series of 2022: our top 10

It is obviously impossible to know all the TV series released in the current year in Italy, but we have tried to range between the various genres and the various origins, not only considering the more or less vast audience success that the single title has enjoyed. So here is our top 10!

10 – Connect – An eye for an eye

Let’s start with an Far Eastern horror series. Also this year the horror in seriality peeped out only in the last days of the year. And, as often happens, it is the oriental series – after the Korean Hellbound and Sweet Home and the Japanese Alice in Borderland – that dominate the genre on the small screen. In 2022 it was the turn of Connect, a k-drama directed by the brilliant and morbid Japanese director Takashi Miike. The vein is that of body horror whose protagonists are mutant neo-humans (named, precisely, Connect) potentially immortal with the ability to regenerate themselves through a gruesome process thanks to which they bring together limbs and organs separated from the rest of the body. They are frowned upon by society and yet, in a role reversal, we discover that the real monsters aren’t them through introverted Dong-soo’s journey on the hunt for the serial killer who wears one of his eyes. Splatter and violent but also superbly exciting, we recommend it if you have fur on your stomach.

9 – Wednesday | The best TV series of 2022

We continue with a less horror series, which indeed looks much more on the teen drama, with a gloomy and gothic atmosphere. The “dark” series abound in the Netflix schedule (we will see another one in the rankings) but this year it was undoubtedly the heir to the Addams family, Wednesday. The spinoff of the 1960s small-screen classic and cornerstone of an entire subculture, caters to both its niche and the general public. A very good Jenna Ortega with a fixed gaze and a contemptuous attitude, a sort of Edgar Allan Poe and in a contemporary skirt, is the adolescent and vaguely autobiographical version of Tim Burton, creator of the series. Halfway between murder mystery and Bildungsroman of a teenager who resists with all her strength to the claims of approval and inclusion of society and family. She has not convinced everyone, but her global success is undeniable, so she certainly cannot be missing from a top 10 of the best 2022 series.

8 – The Sandman

If it often happens that a novel or a cult comic cannot be transposed to the screen, there is no denying that The Sandman has succeeded in this endeavor. Moreover, the creator of the series is the same creator of the comic series, Neil Gaiman. As the title itself suggests, in this dreamlike series one remains almost hypnotized, cradled by the rarefied atmospheres of the land of dreams suffused with a twilight halo. The eccentric stories of ordinary mortals intertwined with those of the icy protagonist and his family of divine Eternals represent a postmodern and suggestive version of classic Gothic. The result is an undeniably suggestive metaphorical show, the chronicle of the complex and unbalanced relationship between the divine and the human, an ancient and modern moral parable at the same time, which is also visually captivating. You will not regret seeing it.

7 – JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean | The best TV series of 2022

It is an anime inspired by a hugely successful manga series. The first twelve episodes were released on Netflix globally on December 1, 2021, a second block of episodes (13-24) also took place on Netflix on September 1, 2022, while the third and final block of episodes (25-38) was released on December 1, 2022. The series traces the daring adventures of the Joestar family through the generations, starting in the late nineteenth century when the first meeting between Jonathan Joestar and his adoptive brother Dio Brando took place. Each story arc focuses on a different member of the family and features a different setting. The sometimes trashy inspiration and the bizarreness of the situations narrated are the distinctive features of the series.

6 – What We Do in the Shadows

The hilarious and increasingly bizarre mockumentary signed by Jemaine Clement of Flight of the Conchords has reached its fourth season in 2022 (the third broadcast in Italy). If the past, broadcast as usual on Disney +, ended with alarming and revolutionary premises (the group of clumsy and presumptuous vampire roommates separated to follow different paths and Colin Robinson rose to new life), the new episodes manage to be incredibly fresh and excessively incorrect. In the decadent mansion of Staten Island the dysfunctional paternal relationship between Lazlo and baby Colin unfolds. The apparently banal everyday life of long-lived bloodsuckers becomes intriguing again and full of novelties between hilarious parodies, tasty cameos and an increasingly wildly bizarre and creatively free screenplay.

5 – The Rings of Power | The best TV series of 2022

Despite the controversy, the first season of The Rings of Power has attracted the attention of millions of people around the world, thanks to a story that – despite many “poetic licences” – has managed to excite even the hardcore fans by Tolkien. The astronomical budget counterbalanced the very high expectations, and ultimately the series can only be promoted.

4 – Boris

After years and years of prayers first and then waiting, the fourth season of the Italian custom-built Boris has finally been released. It’s arrived on Disney+, and despite the time that has passed, the magic is still what it used to be. We laughed a lot, we were moved to see our favorites again as if they were friends we thought were lost, and we even cried for the elegant and delicate homage to those who really died. The teasing of the series that has always distinguished Boris has even extended to platforms, and we can only be happy about it. Indeed, we sincerely hope that there may also be a fifth season!

3 – Euphoria | The best TV series of 2022

Sam Levinson raises the bar and turns teen drama into a very serious and dangerous business. While Rue’s drama, always played with absolute mastery by Zendaya (26 years old and two Emmys!) attracts us more and more, the story bounced from one character to another, from one era to another, without ever lacking cold lucidity. Honest and driven like few others, he went on in a crescendo culminating in a surprise sort of self-parody that gave Lexi the space and the lights she deserved. And every time everything risked sinking into the absurd or the unbelievable, these characters have managed to make us change our minds with interesting choices or unexpected grace notes.

2 – Better Call Saul

Saul Goodman’s parable ended in 2022 and with him a very long parable that began many years ago with Breaking Bad. America’s most ramshackle lawyer is now cornered, his career and his very life are now completely shattered by the cartel and the federal police, but he still has a few tricks up his sleeve. The sixth season obviously did not disappoint expectations and indeed saw an ending that could set the standard for most of the TV series on the scene. Better Call Saul closes with a bang, acclaimed by audiences and critics (although notoriously poor in awards) and gives us one of the best series of the year and perhaps ever.

1 – House of the Dragon | The best TV series of 2022

If there is a series that has been unrivaled in this 2022 it is the prequel to Game of Thrones. Comparison to the original epic was broadly even. Almost concomitant with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, House of the Dragon was able to establish itself with a much lower budget and with very high expectations after the disappointing ending of the predecessor. The authors have in fact managed to weave a production of the highest level, despite the cumbersome and carefully calibrated gestation on the errors and successes of the mother series. And, fortunately, devoid of the irritating malice that characterized Game of Thrones’ gallery of morbidity, it recovers a raw and realistic tone, despite being a fantasy series.
